The Gun House

The Gun House is a former guard tower on the south bank of the River Teign, once used to shelter soldiers watching over the Shaldon coastal defences. Converted with quirky, characterful design, it now sleeps two guests as a couples-only retreat, with narrow, steep internal stairs and external steps providing alternative access between floors.

The first-floor open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining area has large sliding windows facing the water, a dining space for two, a Smart TV and a well-equipped kitchen with a built-in coffee machine and dishwasher. A Sonos Bluetooth speaker, iPad and mood lighting are provided, along with underfloor heating throughout. Down the winding staircase, the master king-size bedroom has an en-suite shower room with a rainfall shower and WC.

Outside, two seating areas make the most of the river views, and a grill barbecue sits within an enclosed private garden space. It is roughly 50 metres to the beach, from where a ferry crosses to Teignmouth, while Shaldon village, with its butcher, bakery, shop and pubs, is within a mile on foot.

This is not suitable for children or babies, and dogs cannot be accommodated. Parking is not available at the property itself, though a permit is provided for a public car park around 100 metres away. Check-in is from 4pm and check-out before 10am.
