Elberry Cove is a small shingle beach that can only be reached on foot, which is the point of it. It suits walkers and anyone with a dog who wants a summer beach in Torbay without the 1 May to 30 September ban. Plan on a short coast-path walk from Broadsands in Churston Ferrers, and bring what you need, because the cove has no toilets.
Getting there
The cove can only be reached on foot along the coast path. From Broadsands car park you bear right past the beach chalets, cross a large grass area keeping the sea to your left, go through a metal kissing gate and follow the path round. The distance is about 400m and access to the cove is via roughly 30 steps. Access is difficult, with a long uneven path and steps to the shingle.
Dogs
Dogs are allowed on Elberry Cove all year round. By contrast Broadsands bans them from 1 May to 30 September.
Swimming and safety
Tor Bay beaches are not patrolled or monitored by lifeguards. There is a water ski lane at the cove. It is a shingle beach with clear water, classified as a Natural beach under the English Riviera Beach Standard, with no toilets.
What to look for
At the eastern end of the beach are the ruins of the Elberry bathhouse, and the cove sits between woodland and fields. If you want sand, toilets and a cafe, walk back to Broadsands or head along the bay to Paignton Sands.
