Babbacombe is a small shingle beach under the cliffs of Babbacombe Downs, on the eastern edge of Torquay. It suits a quieter day of rock pools, a paddle and a walk, and dogs can come along all year. It draws local families, diving groups and anglers, and weekend sailors favour it.
Getting there and parking
The road down to the beach is single track, very steep and full of turns, and access is very difficult and restricted. There is a pay and display car park at the bottom of the hill, next to the beach, and a flat promenade once you arrive. The toilets and the small cafe are seasonal.
If you would rather not drive down, The Babbacombe Cliff Railway has run since 1926 from Babbacombe Downs to neighbouring Oddicombe Beach, and it is the easier option for anyone who does not fancy the steep lane. On foot, a steep slope climbs from the beach to Babbacombe Downs and Gardens.
Swimming and safety
Tor Bay beaches are not patrolled or monitored by lifeguards, so go in with a buddy, tell someone when you expect to be back, and stay in the shallows parallel to the shore. The sheltered beach is a good place to learn sailing, and a renowned scuba diving site.
Dogs
Dogs are allowed on Babbacombe Beach all year round. Dog fouling must be picked up, and a dog that is excitable or does not respond to commands should stay on a lead. Oddicombe, around the headland, is closed to dogs from 1 May to 30 September.
Things to do nearby
Walk up to Babbacombe Downs, whose promenade is known as the highest in England, for a view across Lyme Bay. The South West Coast Path leads from the beach towards Torquay past Hope’s Nose. Anglers use the breakwater, and the rock pools and cliffs are worth exploring. Other beaches within reach are Anstey’s Cove and Meadfoot.
