Teignmouth is a traditional town beach: sand underfoot, the Victorian Promenade and Pier behind it, and a play area and adventure golf close by. It suits holidaymakers who want a promenade, play area and adventure golf rather than a remote cove. If you are choosing where to stay, start with Teignmouth.

Swimming and lifeguards

The RNLI runs seasonal lifeguard patrols on this long sandy beach, which stretches from the mouth of the Teign Estuary east towards Dawlish. No flags means no lifeguards. Swim or bodyboard between the red and yellow flags, and call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard if you see someone in trouble. Watercraft are barred from the area between the yellow marker buoys and the shoreline to protect bathers.

Dogs

From 1 April to 30 September, dogs are not allowed on the seashore between the Eastcliff slipway and the lighthouse at the Point, and must be kept on leads around the Den and Promenade. Holcombe Beach at the East Cliff slipway allows dogs all year, and so does the back beach beyond the lighthouse.

Parking and facilities

The town beach has parking, public and disabled toilets, baby care and a shower. Deckchairs are for hire, and the seafront has amusements, a children’s play area, adventure golf, a skate park and an activity trail. Check signs on the day for car park charges and hours.

Nearby

River Beach, on the estuary side of town, has no lifeguards but allows dogs all year, and a ferry crosses to Shaldon from here. From the water’s edge you look up the Teign towards Dartmoor. Across the river, Shaldon’s Ness Cove also allows dogs all year.
