Clovelly is a privately owned fishing village on the North Devon coast where the steep cobbled High Street drops 400 feet to a working harbour. The village has been in the same family ownership for generations and maintains its historic character through careful preservation. Access is controlled through the visitor centre where your admission includes parking, entry to Clovelly Court Gardens, two museums and an audio-visual presentation about the village’s history.
The cobbled street
The main street descends through the village past whitewashed cottages with flower-filled window boxes. No vehicles can use this route - supplies are brought down by sledge, a method that has continued for centuries. The cobbles can be slippery in wet weather, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The steepness is constant rather than stepped, which some visitors find easier to manage than others.
Allow time for the return journey. The walk back up takes most people 15-30 minutes depending on fitness. In summer months a Land Rover service operates from the harbour to the visitor centre as an alternative to climbing.
The harbour and village
The harbour remains a working quay where fishing boats still land catches. The Red Lion Hotel stands on the waterfront - an 18th-century inn with rooms overlooking the harbour. Two small museums sit along the main street: the Fisherman’s Cottage shows living conditions from a century ago, while the Kingsley Museum examines the village’s connection with Charles Kingsley, author of The Water Babies, whose father was rector here.
Clovelly Court Gardens
Entry to the walled gardens is included in your admission ticket. These sheltered gardens benefit from the Gulf Stream’s warming effect and grow plants that struggle elsewhere in Devon. The gardens cover several acres and include woodland walks as well as formal beds. They sit away from the main village so plan your time accordingly if you want to visit both.
Planning your visit
The visitor centre at the top of the village includes a cafe, gift shop and facilities. The 20-minute film provides context before you descend into the village. Mobile signal can be limited so download any information you need before arrival. Parking uses the JustPark system - set this up before you arrive.
Dogs are welcome on leads. The steep street and steps around the harbour make wheelchair access difficult - contact the visitor centre on 01237 431781 to discuss specific access needs before your visit.
