Spikes Plaice

Set in an elevated position above a quiet narrow lane in Appledore, Spikes Plaice is a two-bedroom cottage sleeping up to five guests across two upper floors. The village quayside, pubs, cafes and galleries are around 300 metres away on foot, and the nearest beach is roughly a mile.

Arriving via a stepped pathway, guests enter a hallway that leads through to a sitting room with a log burner, a fully reclining sofa and an Amazon Fire TV. The owner provides the first basket of logs; guests need to sign into their own Amazon account to use streaming. A kitchen and dining area to the rear is equipped with an electric oven, four-ring hob, microwave and fridge, and a utility area just outside the rear door holds a washing machine and freezer. The king-size bedroom on the first floor has glimpses of the estuary, while the second-floor room contains a double and a single bed beneath a Velux window. The family bathroom on the first floor has a bath with shower over and WC.

Steps from the kitchen lead to an enclosed rear patio with a garden table, chairs and BBQ. A small lawn with a storage shed sits at the front of the property, though this front area is not enclosed. One private parking space is available to the rear. A highchair and travel cot are provided, and two dogs are welcome, though additional charges may apply.

A seasonal passenger ferry connects the village to Instow and its sandy beach across the estuary. Westward Ho! and its two miles of sand are around two miles away, and the market town of Bideford, departure point for Lundy Island day trips, is roughly three miles. Arrival is from 16:00 and departure before 10:00.
