1790s coaching inn in Exmouth, 28 rooms, Liszt stayed here

Manor Hotel occupies a Grade II listed building on The Beacon in Exmouth, built in the 1790s as a coaching inn when horse-drawn carriages were the way to travel long distances. The composer Franz Liszt stayed here in 1840, marked today by a blue plaque.

The family-run hotel has 28 rooms, each decorated individually rather than to a standard template, and many of them, on every floor, look out to sea or over the Exe estuary. The hotel also runs the Hat or Lemon bar and a restaurant. Free high-speed Wi-Fi covers the building, and the hotel regularly hosts weddings, conferences and other celebrations in its function space.

Exmouth's marina and beach are a short walk from the hotel, along streets that once housed other Regency-era residents including Lady Byron and Lady Nelson. The seafront shops and cafes sit within the same easy walk, and the wide Beacon green in front of the hotel gives space for a stroll without heading down to the water.

**Best for:** Guests interested in Regency history and a short walk to Exmouth's seafront and marina.

**Less good for:** Anyone needing full step-free access - the period building has steps and uneven floors in places, and not all rooms are accessible.
