5 Beachdown sits within a small gated development of 12 houses, 150 yards from the sandy beach in Challaborough. Designed with the living space upstairs, it sleeps 8 across four ground-floor bedrooms: two king-size doubles, one with its own en-suite shower room, and two twin rooms, one of which converts to a super king-size double on request. A family bathroom serves the remaining bedrooms.

Stairs from the hall lead straight up to an open-plan living space with a nautical theme, a well-equipped kitchen and a central dining table. Bi-fold doors open onto a private terrace for meals outdoors, with steps up to an enclosed roof garden furnished with loungers.

Two well-behaved dogs are welcome, and a cot and highchair can be arranged on request. Electric car charging is available only by prior arrangement with the owner, and electric usage in the house is monitored. The sandy Blue Flag beach is just a wander away in wetsuits and flip-flops for paddling, bodyboarding and surfing. Ringmore, just over the headland, has a pub serving meals and real ale, and the surf school at Bigbury-on-Sea offers tuition and equipment hire.

Off-road parking is provided for three cars, and WiFi, phone, fuel and power are included in the rent. No smoking is permitted, and the pub is under a mile away.

Salcombe is around 12 miles away and Plymouth about 20, both useful for a wider choice of shops and restaurants. Bed linen and towels are included in the rent, along with a TV, Blu-ray and DVD player.
