Hembury Gate The Shippon

This converted barn provides single-storey accommodation for four guests a short drive from Sheepwash, with Great Torrington a little further away for shops, a cinema and a weekly pannier market. A few stone steps lead up to the front door, opening into a light-filled lounge and diner with a wood burner, comfortable seating and a Smart TV.

The kitchen is fitted with an electric oven and hob, microwave, Smeg fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, so self-catering guests are well equipped. A utility room adds extra space for coats, boots and laundry. Two bedrooms serve the property: a super-king room that can be made up as a twin on request, and a double, with both sharing one shower room and WC.

Outside, a patio directly behind the property holds a table, chairs, a charcoal barbecue and a pizza oven, making it a practical spot for meals in the open air. A private wood-fired hot tub with countryside views is also included, with firewood supplied free of charge. Guests can use an adjoining paddock for games or dog walking, and a covered barn houses a dartboard and air hockey table.

Practical details worth noting: private off-road parking is provided along with an electric vehicle charging point, and one dog is permitted, subject to an additional charge. Arrival is from 4.30pm and departure by 10am. CCTV covers the parking area and entrance only, not the gardens or interior. A travel cot and highchair are available for younger guests, and internet access is included throughout the stay.
