Gidleigh Park- A Relais & Chateaux Hotel

On the edge of Dartmoor National Park and on the banks of the River Teign, Gidleigh Park is a 24-room country house hotel about six minutes' drive from Chagford. The Tudor-style house sits within more than 100 acres of woodland and gardens, with most rooms looking out over the grounds or the river.

The restaurant holds a Michelin star and draws on a kitchen garden that supplies herbs and fruit through the growing season. Meals are built around seasonal, locally sourced produce, with a wine cellar to match, and breakfast runs to a full English alongside continental options.

Rooms are individually styled rather than uniform, each with a flat-screen TV and an en-suite bathroom; a self-contained two-bedroom cottage on the grounds suits a family or small group wanting more space than a standard room. Chagford's granite-built town centre and Castle Drogo, in the Teign Gorge nearby, both make a change of scene from the quiet of the estate.

**Best for:** Special-occasion stays and guests planning a visit around the Michelin-starred restaurant, with Dartmoor walking routes close by.

**Less good for:** Guests wanting a budget rate - dining and rooms here sit at the top of the local market, priced for a special occasion rather than a casual stay.
