Drake Hotel Plymouth

The Drake Hotel occupies a former naval officer's private residence on Lockyer Street, built around 1820 to 1830, two minutes' walk from Plymouth Hoe promenade. Nineteen rooms are spread across four floors, reached by the original staircases rather than a lift, and the dining room keeps its ornate period ceiling from the house's early years. Free parking is available front and back of the building.

Each room has an en-suite shower, a flat-screen TV, a wardrobe and tea and coffee facilities, with toiletries provided. Wifi covers the building, and staff help guests carry luggage up the stairs where needed. Breakfast is served each morning with vegetarian and vegan options.

Plymouth Hoe, the Barbican and the Theatre Royal are all within five minutes' walk, and Royal William Yard's Grade I listed buildings are a short walk further on. The bus and rail stations sit nearby too, and a handful of cafes serving breakfast are close by. Plymouth city centre and its restaurants and nightlife are on the doorstep; the National Marine Aquarium on the Barbican waterfront is a short walk beyond the Hoe.

**Best for:** guests who want a central, budget-conscious base near the Hoe and Barbican and don't mind stairs.

**Less good for:** anyone who needs a lift or step-free access, since all four floors are reached by stairs only.
