Captain's Rest

This former fisherman's cottage sits within walking distance of the quayside, pubs, shops and galleries in Appledore, a village on the North Devon coast. Spread over three floors, it has been furnished with antique pieces and original artwork throughout, giving it a character quite different from a standard holiday let.

The cottage sleeps six across three bedrooms. The first floor has two doubles, one with an en-suite shower room and WC, the other looking out over the estuary. A twin bedroom occupies the second floor, reached via a steep staircase, alongside a snug with a TV and DVD player. The family bathroom, with a shower over the bath and WC, is on the ground floor, and there is a further separate WC outside. A second lounge has its own TV and a coal-effect gas fire, while the dining room seats six beneath a period fireplace that is no longer working.

The kitchen has an electric cooker, gas hob, fridge, dishwasher and microwave, and a utility room in an external shed holds a washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer, along with an outside loo. Outside, an enclosed, south-facing paved courtyard garden has furniture and a barbecue, suited to eating outdoors during a stay. Free roadside parking can be found close to the cottage when spaces are available, with a public car park nearby as a back-up.

Two dogs are welcome, though puppies under twelve months old cannot be accepted. A travel cot and highchair are provided for younger guests. Internet access is available, and towels can be hired if needed. Beaches, including Westward Ho!, are within reach of the property, and the Tarka Trail and South West Coast Path run through the wider area for those wanting to explore beyond the village.
