Hartland Abbey is a family home with gardens and a woodland walk down to the coast. Its visitor planning page makes that lived-in character clear. A visit combines rooms still associated with the Stucley family, displays about the estate and time outside. If you are staying around Hartland, this is a day out to plan around the house’s opening schedule.

Inside the house

The Abbey’s architecture guide points out the Alhambra Passage, with its vaulted, stencilled ceiling designed by George Gilbert Scott. In the Drawing Room, twelve murals sit above linenfold panelling. The basement passage preserves cloisters from the earlier abbey building. These details give you things to look for as you move through the house, rather than treating each room as another collection of furniture.

Gardens and the coast

The woodland and walled gardens include the Victorian Fernery, Camellia Garden and Baronet’s Bog Garden. Woodland paths connect the garden areas. The Abbey credits Gertrude Jekyll with helping Lady Stucley shape these paths and terraces during visits in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

A separate woodland walk reaches Blackpool Mill on the coast, described by the Abbey as a mile away. Include walking shoes in your plans if you want to combine the rooms with the grounds. The operator says the beach track is uneven in places, so check the route’s suitability for everyone in your group before making it part of the day.

Admission and access

For 2026, Hartland Abbey lists adult admission at £18.50 for the house, gardens, grounds, beach walk and exhibitions, or £15 without the house. Its regular season runs Sunday to Thursday until 1 October. Check current hours and any special events before travelling.

The house entrance has steps and the gardens have steps in places. The operator describes level access to the tea-room and exhibitions, but says electric mobility wheelchairs cannot enter the house because of narrow rooms and corridors. Contact Hartland Abbey on 01237 441496 to discuss your own access needs. Entry to the Old Kitchens Tea Room requires an admission ticket.
