Northam Burrows is a coastal country park beside Westward Ho!, with grassland, dunes and saltmarsh at the Taw and Torridge estuary. It is a different outing from staying on the beach all day: start with the visitor map, then choose a walk suited to the weather and your party.

Planning a walk

Torridge District Council identifies the Burrows as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Horses and sheep graze here. Keep clear of the animals and avoid disturbing wildlife while following the marked access guidance.

The park remains open to pedestrians, but vehicle access has restrictions. Check those arrangements and the current parking information before driving through. The council links to a visitor map and walking routes from its park page.

Facilities and the beach

Toilets are available at the Burrows Centre, while the exhibition and shop operate seasonally. Check opening details for the date you intend to visit. The council identifies the town of Westward Ho! as the main ramped route to the beach; access through the Burrows is not the same route.

Dogs

Read the council’s dog guidance before walking across the common or onto the sand. Dogs must be controlled around grazing animals and wildlife, and seasonal beach restrictions apply at Sandymere. Our Westward Ho! beach guide explains that boundary and links to the official map.
