West Yard Cottage

West Yard Cottage stands attached to the owner's farmhouse on a 30-acre smallholding near Ashreigney, close to Chulmleigh. Sleeping four across two bedrooms, it suits couples or small families wanting a working-farm setting without sacrificing modern comforts.

The kitchen/diner has a wooden floor, exposed beams, an electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. Beyond it, the lounge is warmed by a wood burner (a first basket of logs is included) and has a TV and comfortable seating. Five steps lead to a half landing with boot and coat storage, and a utility area holding a washing machine and a WC. Upstairs, the king-size and bunk bedrooms both have exposed beams, country views and their own en-suite shower room with WC.

Outside, a private patio with garden furniture looks across the surrounding countryside, and guests can wander the 7 acres of private woodland on the smallholding. By arrangement with the owner, visitors can meet some of the farm animals, and a walk across the meadow reaches a fenced wildlife pond with a sheltered, undercover dining area; this can be booked for exclusive use, free of charge, and guests are welcome to bring their own food and drink. Off-road parking is provided for two cars, and internet access is available.

This is a family-friendly base with a travel cot and highchair provided, though it is not suitable for dogs. Towels are included, and heating (a mix of electric and biomass) is covered in the stay. A pub and shop lie around four miles away, useful to know given the rural setting.
