16th-century coaching inn in Topsham, 4 miles from Exeter

The Globe is a 16th-century coaching inn on Fore Street in Topsham, four miles from Exeter, mixing original beams with a boutique-style interior.

Vi-Spring beds, flat-screen TVs, en suite bathrooms and wifi furnish each of the rooms, and a two-bedroom apartment gives families or larger groups more space. St Austell Brewery runs the inn as one of its managed pubs, and a select number of rooms take dogs, up to two per room for £20 a stay.

The bar serves a changing menu of pub classics and Sunday roasts alongside West Country ales and daily specials built around Devon produce, open from 7:30am to 11pm every day. Topsham's independent shops, local markets and riverside walks, and Exeter's wider dining scene, are all within a short drive or a longer walk along the estuary from the inn's front door.

**Best for:** couples, small groups and dog owners wanting a historic Devon inn with a working pub kitchen and a pub garden close to Exeter.

**Less good for:** anyone wanting a spa or leisure facilities on site, or a quiet hotel lounge rather than a working pub bar.
