North Sands is a sheltered sandy beach at Salcombe with a car park 50 metres from the sand, a cafe and toilets nearby, and no seasonal dog restrictions listed. It suits families and dog owners. If you are staying in Salcombe, check which beach a listing refers to, because South Sands is a different place with different rules.

Swimming and lifeguards

There is no lifeguard at North Sands, and the water is suitable for young children when supervised. The beach is sheltered from west winds, with rocks at the back. Without lifeguards there is nobody to ask about conditions, so keep children within arm’s reach and avoid the water if it looks rough.

Parking and getting there

The car park has 89 spaces, charges apply, and it sits about 50 metres from the beach. Access to the sand is by a concrete ramp. The ramp is quite steep, and it is also the wheelchair route onto the beach, so take that into account if anyone in your group has limited mobility.

A cafe and a beach goods shop are about 100 metres away, and toilets are about 150 metres away. Salcombe’s slipway at North Sands does not permit craft to be launched.

Dogs

There are no known restrictions for dogs at North Sands. Several South Hams beaches close to dogs from 1 May to 30 September, including South Sands, but North Sands is not among them. Most other beaches welcome well-controlled dogs all year. Check any signs on the day.

Nearby

For a longer outing, Soar Mill Cove is another South Hams beach, and Bantham has a large car park and surf.
