Powderham Castle

Castles & Heritage Sites

Historic family home of the Earl of Devon set in a deer park beside the Exe Estuary, with state rooms, gardens and estate walks.

Powderham Castle has remained in the Courtenay family for over 600 years. The castle sits in parkland beside the Exe Estuary, surrounded by a working deer park where fallow deer roam freely. The building combines medieval origins with Georgian and Victorian additions - each generation adapted the castle to their needs while keeping its defensive core.

The state rooms

Guided tours take visitors through the main state rooms where the family’s collections remain on display. The Music Room features elaborate rococo plasterwork by John Jenkins, while the Marble Hall demonstrates Victorian confidence with imported marble and family portraits. These aren’t museum displays - many rooms remain in regular family use, giving visits a lived-in character that distinguishes Powderham from more formal historic houses.

The rose drawing room and library contain furniture and objects collected across generations. Look for the Axminster carpet specially woven for the house and the family photographs that mix with older portraits - reminders that this remains a home rather than a monument.

The grounds and deer park

The deer park covers 3,500 acres of rolling Devon countryside. Marked walks take you through areas where fallow deer graze - keep a respectful distance as these are wild animals. The walled garden operates seasonally and contains a kitchen garden that supplies the castle.

The castle runs a programme of outdoor events through summer, from archery to falconry displays. Check the website calendar when planning your visit as these events can add context or affect normal visiting patterns.
